How did the rose become the Blessed Virgin’s flower?  Why is the rose connected to a Spanish girl’s 15th birthday.  Below is the story. 

In Mexico, almost 500 years ago Our Lady appeared to the poor and humble Juan Diego.  The Bishop refused to believe Juan so Our Lady visited him again.  She had Juan gather roses on a cold December day, rap them in his Tilma and present them to the Bishop.  In the Indian cultures of that time, the tilma (apron) was the exterior expression of the innermost identity of the person.  The roses fell to the floor before the Bishop but on Juans’s Tilma now appeared the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.  His Tilma may be seen today hanging at the Shrine at Guadalupe. The Virgin Mother said these words to Juan:

  “I truly am your merciful Mother… of all who dwell in this land, of all those who love me, of those who cry to me. Here I shall listen to their weeping and their sorrows.  …I shall cure their many sufferings, afflictions, and sorrows.

My dance with him

I’ll never ever forget

His tears of love

Just broke my heart 

His lifetime of work and debt

I prayed for strenght

To be the woman of grace

Leave the little girl behind

To understand a daughter’s job

And kissed his forehead one last time
